With the speeding up of opening-up to the outside world, especially after China's entry into WTO and Beijing's successful bid for Olympic Games of 2008, there will be more and more international cooperation and exchanges. English as an international language is becoming increasingly important. Non-English majors in China make up the majority of English learners and shoulder the arduous task of cooperation and exchange with the outside world. As far as the present situation of college English teaching is concerned, it is far from satisfactory. The present author's socio-culture test and students' scores in CET4 demonstrate that the students' culture competence is lower than their linguistic competence. This can not meet the new demand of the current society.Since language and culture are so closely related that to use a language well one must know the culture of that language, it is up to the EFL teachers to introduce cultural knowledge in the language teaching. The paper first describes present situation of college English teaching in China, then puts forward the questions and purpose of research. Based on theories of culture teaching, the author of the thesis advocates that it is necessary to introduce the culture knowledge to non-English majors in class, which can be done from several aspects, which are vocabulary, translation, reading and writing. In addition, to facilitate the culture teaching, corresponding measures should be taken beyond the class. These include many activities out of class, such as providing the lectures, helping them read in order to enlarge their knowledge and encouraging them to contact with foreign people. To achieve this purpose, college English teachers should possess bilingual competence as well as bicultural competence. Teachers should also command good teaching techniques of teaching culture in class. In short, both theory and practice show that culture teaching is inseparable with language teaching. As long as it is utilized properly, much better teaching effects can be attained.
