A Tentative Study On The Re-creation Of Katherine Mansfield's Writing Characteristics In Translation

Katherine Mansfield, a genius New Zealand woman writer, is generally held to have revolutionized the 20^th Century English short story. And she is especially known for her language characteristics, masterly use of color, as well as the application of shifting perspectives.The thesis intends to explore the re-creation of Mansfield's writing characteristics in translation. Through the evaluation and comparison of several translated texts, we see the sparkling points as well as shadows. During this process, Eugene A. Nida's Functional Equivalence is applied. In Nida's theory, the main aim of the translator is to produce as nearly as possible the same effect on his readers as was produced on the readers of the original. With the guidance of this theory, the solution is found to the seemingly impossible translation of Mansfield's writing, which has strong individual stamp.Through the exploration and evaluation of Mansfield's works, it turns out that in the rendering of content and form, translators shall be guided by the effect produced on the part of readers; when translators fail to realize the faithful rendering of both form and content, or when form and content even contradict each other, a unification can only be achieved on the level of effect.
