With the development of society and science and technology, nowadays the world becomes smaller and smaller, the activities of intercultural communication become more and more. China as a developing country which is getting stronger day by day, has more and more communication with all the other countries in the world. Therefore, English is more important than before. However, for a long time, language teachers, influenced by the traditional teaching approaches, used to teach a foreign language with more emphasis on its linguistic forms than on its relation to its culture elements. As a result, many students experienced a sense of frustration and failure in communication with foreigners even if they had got several years of formal English education and good results in examinations. Therefore, teachers should introduce the students the Chinese and western cultural background step by step in the English class in order to improve their awareness of intercultural communication. So it is quite important to let student pay much more attention to the cultural difference when the middle school students begin to learn English. Thus it can make a positive transfer of culture for English learning and communicative competence for students and improve the students' enthusiasm on English learning, reduce the pragmatic failure caused by cultural difference.After literature review and an investigation of students' pragmatic competence in Yingtan No.1 middle school, the author of this thesis has realized more clearly that the failure, blown as pragmatic failure, is caused by ignorance of the target culture rather than linguistic errors. It is clear that teachers should enhance cultural input in order to reduce pragmatic failure and improve cultural communicative competence in different level of English teaching, especially in the middle school of the basic.This thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter One, Introduction, gives a brief description of this study. Chapter Two, Literature Review, states some basic concepts in this study and other relative definition and the relationship between each other.
