The development of economy, technology, traffic and internet need more and more intercultural communication. However, cultural conflicts become the chief obstacle to intercultural communication. So that it is necessary to study intercultural communication and find the reasons for cultural conflicts. In the west, persons have studied intercultural communication for a long time, such as Don R. McCreary who published A Cross-Cultural Study. In recent years, Chinese scholars began to study intercultural communication. For example, Zhou Rong published A Cross-Cultural Study of the Metaphorical Representation of Time. In the west, people have studied The Woman Warrior from 80s, but it has been studied form the standpoint of critical theories. In this thesis, The Woman Warrior is studied from the intercultural standpoint.Maxine Hong Kingston is a Chinese American writer. The Woman Warrior published in 1976 is her first work and can be considered as her autobiographical novel. Although her stories had happened in years from the forties to the seventies of the 20th century, the social status of Chinese American women have not yet been materially improved up to the 21st century: cultural conflicts, racial discrimination and sex discrimination still exist. The author of this thesis attempts to make an in-depth and thorough research into the analysis why it is so difficult for Chinese American women to take a position of prestige in American mainstream society. The thesis is composed of five parts:Part One is an introduction. It first introduces Maxine Hong Kingston and her major works. Then it gives a brief summary of The Woman Warrior. Next it presents a survey of the status of Chinese Americans. The part finally explores the influence of intercultural communication.Part Two focuses on the analysis of different cultural values, religious belief and different family structures by analyzing the novel. It reveals cultural conflicts by analyzing different aspects of culture.
