The First World War not only destroyed the traditional value of American society, but also created many young writers who were called "The Lost Generation". Among them, some had experienced the First World War and felt tired of it; some became aware of the war indirectly and might have the illusion of the postwar society with disappointed and pessimistic emotions. The sameness of their work was to reflect the lost feeling and emotion in the postwar society of America. Among them, the most attractive are Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises and Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby.Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald are the representative young writers of "The Lost Generation". Their masterpieces The Sun also Rises and The Great Gatsby have influenced American literature deeply. By comparing the background, the views of women and the writing style of The Sun Also Rises and The Great Gatsby, we could not only understand the essence of the two great novels penetratingly, but also learn the characteristics of the two novels and appreciate their deeper meanings.Hemingway and Fitzgerald both had the talent in writing. Just like two views under the same sky, they have different individualities and living environments; however, they shared the same historical background. They each used their splendid new way of writing to reflect the real situation of American society after the First World War. Their individually writing just started a new trend in American literature history and later influenced the American writers dramatically.
