The mid-1970s saw a great support for research on the second language learning strategies. Thanks to the growing awareness that language learning and teaching needs to be directed toward a learner-centered approach, there appears a paradigm shift from the lockstep preoccupation with how to teach to an exploratory and generative process of how to learn. The traditional focus on the teacher alone is, therefore, shifted to the students and the learning strategies can fit in individually. The aim of the language teaching is not only to develop the students' language ability, but to help and guide them in their own choice of learning strategies to facilitate learning, and therefore cultivate their autonomy.Reading is one of the most important channels for language input in most Chinese classrooms.
