For the last two decades, Yu Hua has remained a controversial writer in the literary arena. With the awareness for tribulation, irresistible foreordination and indulgent description of violence in his novels, he stands out as a pioneer among his peers. However, the gender consciousness imbedded in the male writer has long been neglected by the critics community and seldom touched upon. Drawing on previous studies, this Article identifies a new angle, i.e. gender consciousness and social & cultural mentality, and starts with deconstruction and construction of Yu's novels in his initial and transformation periods, to analyze the relative distinctiveness and integration of patrilineal and matrilineal power and look for the social & cultural mentality of Chinese society over the past 20 years reflected in the widely different styles during the two periods, in a search for the confluence between literature and culture.
