Objective The study is to investigate the relationship of community elderly mental healthand the Coping Styles in Suzhou; and further to analyze its influential factors. The purpose is to offer the relative evidence for the government and social organization in making elderly facilities and enhance the life quality of the elderly. It is a meaningful topic for society, family and themselves.Method 650 elderly people aged 55 or more,from Caixiang community in Suzhou were investigatedon June to September 2004. The investigation tools contain these questionnaires: 1. Questionnaire of General Life. 2. SCL-90 and 3.Questionnaire of Coping Styles. Data was analyzed by SPSS11.5 and by the following statistic methods, such as t-test, F-test, correlative analyze and multiple linear regression.Results 1. The level of the elderly mental health in Suzhou is higher than the nationnorm. 2. The factors of age, income, educational background and coping styles are closely related with the elderly mental health. 3. The coping styles of the elderly changed with the factors of sex, age, educational background and income. When the factors were male, lower age, higher educational background and good incoming, the coping styles of the elderly trend to maturity. 4. The correlative analyze between the elderly mental health and the coping styles indicated that the passive coping styles had negative correlation with the elderly mental health and the positive coping styles had positive correlation with the elderly mental health.Conclusion1. The level of the elderly mental health in Suzhou is high.2. Enhancing the income, adopting positive coping styles can improve the elderly mental health.3.
