On The Moral Idealism Of Premchand

Premchand is a famous writer of modern Indian literature, who enjoys the reputation of "King of the novel" in India. The tendency of moral idealism in Premchand's thought is apparent and the moral theme in his novels which take the moral idealism as their value orientation is very obvious. The thinking tendency and value orientation of the moral idealism is not only an important tie to connect Premchand and the Indian traditional culture, but also an important dimension of Premchand's idealism, and its significance for us to understand Premchand's thought and creativity can not be overlooked. Premchand's moral idealism not only has the general character of the moral idealism, but also has its own distinction. Literary criticism is the theoretic expression of the writer's ideological world, and Premchand discusses the relationship between literature and morality in his literary criticism. He pays attention to the moral purpose and function of the literature as well as the morality and personality of the writer. As to the literary creation, he advocates"the idealist's realism". All of these is strong explanation for Premchand's ideological tendency of moral idealism and has guided function to his writing practice. While the works is the artistic expression of the writer's thought, and Premchand's novels have conveyed the value orientation of the moral idealism artistically, and give expression to the source of morality, the moral idea and the way to achieve the morality. These novels provide rich content to expound and prove the tendency of moral idealism in Premchand's thought. And the spirit of the times, the traditional culture and personality characteristics constitute the main sources of the moral idealism in Premchand's ideological world, which provide the corresponding background knowledge for us to get a more in-depth understanding of Premchand's literary thought and creative practice, but also are an indispensable key to help us enter Premchand's ideological world.This dissertation chooses morality as the main line and takes Premchand's literary thought and his novels as the main studying object, to analyse Premchand's moral idealism deeply and research Premchand's spiritual world.
