The American Native Characteristic Of The Leatherstocking Tales

James Fenimore Cooper was the important American literature founder who has created the many first status in the American history of literature: the first professional writer, the first writer describing the native subjects , the first "own novelist" and so on. He has manifested the lively American style in his most famous magnum opus -the Leatherstocking Tales -that made him one of the inaugurator of the American native literature.This paper mainly started with the Leatherstocking Tales, analyzed systemeticly the American native style of the five novels. It made up of the introduction, the main text and the conclusion. The introduction introduced the present study situation about Cooper home and overseas , the acquired achivements and existent insufficiencies of the stuty concerning the native characteristic of the Leatherstocking Tales. At the same time, it proposed my tentative research plan. The main text constituted by three chapters: The first chapter has specifically analyzed the native literature characteristic of the Leatherstocking Tales in the content and subject matter, which dicussed respectively from three aspects, that is the exploiting for frontier theme, the American native character image and the culture conflicts that showed in that time. The second chaper has introduced the native characteristic from four aspects on the artistic forms , including his pragmatical narrative way, the Indian native language usage, the constructing of"the cooper's type"novel pattern and the American romantic style. The third chaper has analyzed emphasisly the reason why the native characteristic shaped in the Leatherstocking Tales, which mainly analyzed from the social and literary cause of formation. The conclusion has carried on the summary to the main body of the paper, pointed out the innovations and the existent insufficiencies in this paper, and prospected the next research direction.
