Lawrence's life philosophy is quite unique. Because of the philosophical and psychological influences on him, Lawrence concerns much about human psyche in modern society. When his contemporaries are hailing the overwhelming industrialism, Lawrence cries forth the forgotten and unheeded truth. He keeps his unflinching faith in intuition, in spontaneity and in free will and pleads that reason with its limited frontiers and sphere cannot explain every enigma of life. According to Lawrence, a higher life is to live more vividly alive. In order to gain life force and find permanent release from endless sufferings of modern society, man should return to mysterious nature and harmonious man-woman relation.So this thesis, through exploring three different relations in man's life that presented in Lawrence's novels, analyzes Lawrence's life philosophy. They are man-nature relation, man-woman relation and man-society relation. These three dimensions of the relations go parallel and supplement each other. They together clarify Lawrence's harmony principle, "the perfected relation between man and his circumambient universe is life itself, for mankind."In the dehumanizing society, man's instinct has been subdued by religion, education and other industrial mechanism. Lawrence holds that the freedom of the individual is indispensable for the growth of spontaneous self. So the way to get freedom in modern society is to keep spontaneous feelings, be true to one's self. And nature has the mysterious power to arouse human instinct. The attraction between man and woman is out of intuition. It requires instinct and true deep feelings. So the harmony between man and nature, man and woman is an effective way to help people remain spontaneous feelings and keep individuality and freedom in modern society.This thesis first explores the relation between man and nature.
