On Style Transference Of Chapter Titles Of Hong Lou Meng

Style translation is an important part of study in literary translation. Hong Lou Meng, as one of the masterpieces among classical Chinese novels, indicates the peak of the novels characterized by chapters and shows its unique artistic charm both in language and content. Due to its position in Chinese literary history, different people study it from different aspects. It is true as far as the study of translation of Hong Lou Meng is concerned. But as for the theses on translation of the chapter titles, few can be found available. In fact, chapter titles are the most distinctive mark of this type of novel. Furthermore, the language features and the form characteristics of the titles themselves are special and should not be neglected. That is the initial motive of the writer to begin such a thesis. After making comparison and contrast between the two versions, which are translated by Yang Xianyi and Hawkes respectively, the writer intends to discuss the features of the style of the chapter titles of Hong Lou Meng and explore the translation of this language form.This thesis is composed of five chapters. In the first chapter, an introduction is given to show the objective, necessity, theoretical value and practical value of the study and the general structure of the thesis as well. Through observing, the writer finds that many differences lie in the two versions. Relative researches indicate that the former studies on translation of chapter titles lack theoretical bases and sufficient examples to support the viewpoints produced by the researchers. To solve the problem and to find out the relations between the original and the two versions concerning the translation of chapter titles, the writer starts her study and begins the writing of the thesis.The study on style transference of chapter titles of Hong Lou Meng is started from the definition of style. Here style is regarded as observable and can be contained both in contents and in forms of a text. In the second chapter, the theories of subjectivity and intersubjectivity, which are gradually developed into the field of translation by theorists, are introduced to provide an angle of philosophy.
