| Since 1952 when Harris published the paper "Discourse Analysis", discourse analysis has had a history of more than 50 years. However, the interactional relation between writers and readers of written discourses and the significance of such relation to textual construction were not paid attention to and studied until the late 20th century. Researchers found out that there exists interactional relation between writers and readers of written discourses. Hoey names such relation "textual interaction". Texts are the evidence of the interaction between writers and readers. And such interactional relation is of active significance to textual construction. Texts can be viewed as the product of the interaction between writers and readers.English medical research papers are an important source of information of medical scientific research workers and a channel of communication among them all over the world. And medical scientific research workers also set forth their own latest research achievements and hope to communicate with other medical scientific research workers at home and abroad through English medical research papers. Thus, the study of the textual construction of English medical research papers is of momentous current significance.This thesis, based on dialogism and coherence, and adopting a descriptive-explanatory research method, analyzes textual interaction and how the semantic coherence of text is built in the case of writers and readers interacting with each other. On the basis of the above theoretical framework and through numerous case studies, this thesis applies textual interaction to the textual construction of English medical research papers.
