The source text of this translation report is a journal article titled Translation as a Rhetoric of Meaning, written by José M.Dávila-Montes from the University of Texas. It points out that translation and rhetoric may come to halt for the lack of interdisciplinarity. Therefore, the author presents a feasible interdisciplinary study between these two fields, which has positive implications for the further development of translation and rhetoric. The source text is an academic text, which belongs to informative text, with rigorous and formal language features.Translation is not effortless, let alone academic translation. It is the biggest challenge for the translator to produce a coherent translation to convey the author’s viewpoint.Drawing on textual coherence theory, three perspectives should be taken into consideration in the completion of a translation as a coherent text.At the level of grammatical coherence, the translator tries to grasp the coherent feature from the perspectives of reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction. After analyzing the specific cases, the following methods can be adopted to achieve grammatical coherence, namely, clarification, specification and amplification. With respect to semantic coherence, the translation of dash has been discussed in detail.According to its function, the translator employs deletion, conversion and retention.Regarding to stylistic coherence, the discussion turns to the transformation of the figures of speech to reproduce the stylistic features of the source text.Through the analysis and discussion of the above three perspectives, the preliminary conclusion is that textual coherence theory is feasible and practical, and meanwhile has a guiding role in making the translation coherent. It’s also expected to the report could offer some references for the further research of academic translation.
