This thesis holds that Mark Twain has created three types of images of China: Pagan Chinese image in his early play Ah Sin and novel Roughing It, racism victims image in his report articles and novel Goldsmith's Friends Abroad Again, and suffered colonialism victims image in some of his novels and late editorials, on the basis of re-organization and exploration of Mark Twain's works on China. Also, by close text reading of Mark Twain's essay The Fable of the Yellow Terror and stereotype analysis on Mark Twain's works on China, the thesis further proposes the writers' perspective behind the images and background factors of his opinions to explore Mark Twain's Orientalism perspective and Yellow Peril theories. Also, this thesis discusses how to appreciate Mark Twin from literature history perspective. |
