College English Curriculum Requirements (Requirements) sets "developing students' ability to use English in an all-round way" and " enhancing their ability to study independently" as the main objective of College English teaching and learning. The Requirements requires colleges and universities to "remould the existing unitary teacher-centered pattern of language teaching by introducing new teaching models with the help of multimedia and network technology so that English language teaching will be free from the constraints of time or place and geared towards students' individualized and autonomous learning". Moreover, the Requirements points out, " An important indicator of the successful reform of the teaching model is the development of individualized study methods and the autonomous learning ability on the part of students". According to the Requirements, the traditional teacher-centered teaching model has been unable to cater for the present reform of College English teaching and learning, thus promoting students' autonomy in English learning becomes an urgent task. Meanwhile, the Computer Assisted Language Learning model (CALL) based on network technology sheds some light on the enhancement of individualized and autonomous learning.On the basis of the evaluation and analysis of the students' current autonomous learning and in light of theories on learners' autonomy, this author applied the Computer Assisted Language Learning model with New Horizon College English (NHCE) in English teaching at Fujian Normal University (FNU) and explored the effects and benefits of CALL on students' language learning within 2 experimental semesters. The author chose 5 classes (421 students) that participated in the project of College English teaching and learning reform as experimental classes and the other 5 normal classes (382 students) as control classes in the experiment. The analysis of the students' achievements of listening and reading in the 4 exams reveals significant progress in listening and reading achieved by students of the experimental classes under the NHCE system and students of the experimental classes make significantly greater progress in the achievements of listening and reading than those of the control classes.
