With the popularity and development of computer, the whole world has come into an era of information. Computer-assisted Language Learning (CALL) has also emerged as a new trend in foreign language teaching and research. The powerful Internet and multimedia make it possible for learners to study at any time in the new CALL environment, which provides more convenient and authentic language learning environment than that offered in the traditional learning situation. With the help of computer, language learners are expected to achieve more good results.Based on the theories of constructivism, humanism and cognitive psychology, the paper investigates new characteristics of Chinese English majors under CALL environment. It mainly explores their attitude toward computer-assisted language learning, the use of language learning strategy under CALL environment, aiming at finding out ways to improve English major students’ autonomous learning ability under CALL. Besides, from the students’perspectives, the role of teachers is probed into and is expected to change in order to cater for students’ new needs under CALL environment.Employing the quantitative method of a questionnaire, the author conducted the survey among147sophomores who maj.or in English at Shandong University. The results show that almost all the students have an easy access to computer and the Internet. Most of them spend more than one hour one day in using computer and the Internet to learn English. A majority of students have positive attitude toward computer-assisted language learning, thinking highly of the great influence of computer on such aspects as listening, speaking, reading and writing. However, most of the students hold negative attitude toward communication via computer and the Internet. In terms of language learning strategy use under CALL environment, the results in using cognitive, social and affective strategy are satisfactory, with an exception of metacognitive strategy which needs to be paid attention to. Data of independence sample T-test show that there are significant differences between frequent computer users and infrequent computer users in language learning process and the strategy use under CALL environment. The significant differences between two groups also occur in tutorial expectations under CALL.Finally, according to the survey results, the author points out that on the one hand, students are supposed to reinforce the use of metacognitive strategy use and to learn how to design plan, set learning goals and choose proper learning content. In this way, they can be better off in autonomous learning under CALL; on the other hand, it is advised that teachers should transfer their roles in the traditional teaching mode by using appropriate methods, so as to better meet the needs of learner autonomy under CALL environment.
