Most of the study on comic language is concerned as a kind of dependency or supplement to literature or dramatic aesthetics, seldom concerned from the aspect of linguistics. As we know, Li Yu and Shakespeare are both famous writers of comedy, though the former is Chinese and the latter is Britain, they had made very abundant practice on comic language, their comic language is so colorful and profound that mode and forms are so appreciable, which make their works carrying so high value for appreciation and research. In this thesis, study will be unfolded according to the comic language in their plays, especially on the forms of their expression: how they build and achieve the comic effect on language; mainly, the study is made through the description from rhetoric and the comparison systematically.In Chapter One: firstly, make a discuss on research values and reasons, then introduce the status in comic creation and comic language theories and forms of Li Yu and Shakespeare, also put up the reasons and significances for choosing their masterpieces. Due to the present data haven't made a boundary for comic language, in this thesis, the writer will give a clear definition on the language structure and the implication of comic language of dramatic language in Li Yu'time and Shakespeare days, which will make a foundation for further study. At last, this chapter will summarize the literature of the development and comparison of the research on comic language in comedies of Li Yu and Shakespeare, then give out the conclusion that the research on their comic plays from the perspective of linguistics is seldom touched, which is a very valuable issue to have an investigation.
