Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, known by his stage name Moliere, was a French playwright and actor who has been considered to be one of the greatest masters of comedy and drama in Western literature. Moliere not only inherited the style of ancient Greek, but also absorbed specialies of both Italian Improv Comedy and French Folk Drama. He created his unique methods of actor’s character, and the style of comedy by years’ stage shows and experience. All those rendered him a new style, called Character Drama. He turned comedy into a decent art, and reflected the images of local residents in reality. This touching living atmosphere of normal life offered him to be one of the greatest comedy writers. Moliere enriched stage show, and meanwhile focused on the social real life and class. He is now considered to be a master combined with all comedy style in Europe. In this article, I am emphasizing the solemn sadness carried by the character in his comedies, which are deep Inside of every sole who actually are not tragedy characters, and do not have miserable lives. However, many kind of issues in his period have been digged out by his description in happiness, anger and curse. Moliere tools smile to make audience to sense the cold sadness, and built up his tragedy feelings by comedy character. That unique feature was formed even before the core story was told. During the first months after entering our Shanghai Theatre Academy, I already knew that to build a story or perform a script of drama should start from establishing characters in the story. Whether the character is vivid, or being sensed by audience is the key point. Thus, the play was always remedied by adjusting the actors activity. Moliere’s comedy also focuses on creating people’s characters to form a story, which goes through all the way to the end of the story to present the tragedy. Moliere successfully shaped out numerous classic superior characters, some of who even became the symbols of special characters. Those colorful, and different characters with various destiny reflects back to the tragedy in real life, and presents out our Moliere’s comdey purpose finally.
