The aim of this paper is to investigate the status of life stress and mental health of female college students, and the differences in life stress and in mental health of female college students from diverse backgrounds, and moreover to analyze the causes of the differences, and the relationship between life stress and mental health. Tow research instruments were employed in this paper: the Life Stress Rating Scale for College Students, which was developed in the paper, and Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90). The random samples consisted of 822 students, including 434 female college students, from six colleges and universities.The result shows that: (1) The life event with the highest incidence of female college students was homesick, missing their families, and the life event with the lowest incidence of female college students was the parents'divorce or their families reorganized. However life vent with the lowest incidence caused the greatest subjective stress. (2) There is no significant difference in the overall subjective stress between the female students and male students, but female college students feel significantly more subjective life stress in self physicality and mentality than male college students. All the means of female college students'nine categories of subjective life stress are between "light" and "Medium." (3) The top ten of compositive life stress of female college students focus on school work and personal development these two categories. (4) Female college students'mental health is markedly worse than the norm-women', mainly manifested in obsessive-compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity and depression these factors. (5) There are significant differences in objective life stress, in subjective life stress, and in mental health of female college students from diverse backgrounds. (6) The female college students'objective and subjective life stress are both positively correlated with their mental health. Not only objective but also subjective life stress can predict their mental heath, whereas the subjective life stress is better for prediction than the objective life stress.
