The tragic sense contained in Chinese modern poetry in the 20th century includes two aspects. In the first aspect, it is the maintainance of the traditional tragic sense in poetry, it inherits the consciousness of misery towards the nation and the country which domineers in the traditionalpoetryo In the other aspect, it is the representation of the traditional tragic in the 20th century which is a special historical period. Influenced by the background of that time, the social environmentand the schools of western thoughts,the concentration on the existence of the individual becomes prominent. The tragic sense contained in mordern poetry of China in the 20th century bears strong consciousness towards life. The tragic sense contained in modern Chines Poetry will be discussed and analyzed through six chapters in the whole thesis.The first chapter is going to start from the "tragic sense" and "tragic sense in poetry" to define the "tragic sense in the Chinese modern poetry in the 20th century" and finally drawing a conclusion which contains the two aspects. The tragic sense in the modern poetry of China in the 20th century will be divided into four phrases to discuss from the perspective of the focus on the nation and the focus on the individual and in chapter two, chapter three, chapter four and chapter five respectively. The second chapter mainly discusses the tragic sense in the modern poems in the period of the May Fourth.
