Traditionally in our country, many people think that English teaching mainly consists of the teaching of such basic knowledge as vocabulary and grammar. They think that if a student has mastered enough vocabulary and grammatical knowledge, he or she can communicate freely in English. At the same time, people have gradually realized the importance of listening, speaking and writing. However, people in our country don't attach due importance to English reading comprehension, they tend to think that so long as a person has enough vocabulary and grammatical knowledge, he or she will surely have no problem in reading. But in reality, sufficient vocabulary and grammatical knowledge does not necessarily mean proper reading capability, and the promotion of reading comprehension involves far more aspects. In recent years, because people have formed a better understanding of the importance of reading capability, and a clearer view of the essence of English teaching, people have gradually realized that vocabulary and grammar are not enough for reading comprehension. Unfortunately, although there have appeared some articles and textbooks on reading research, no consensus has been reached on how to effectively improve English reading comprehension. Considering the importance of English reading in communication, this thesis tries to probe into ways to effectively promote reading capability, so as to find a feasible way for Chinese students.
