A Study On Hui-neng's Life From Sutra Liuzutanjing In Dun-huang Version

In the past seven decades, the study on Sutra Liuzutanjing attracted a widearrange of attentions from scholars, and great progresses have been made since then.Based on those achievements, the author of this dissertation puts forward a newmethod for studying sutra Liuzutanjing, the version collected in Dun-huang Museum,which is the oldest and best protected version up to now. Since the sutra focuses onthe narration of Hui-neng's life from the Buddhist master's own angle, the authorraises the possibility of understanding him as a legendary figure. In the wholedissertation, the author applies the innovative method of study to all question inregard to Hui-neng's life in the Liuzutanjing in a hope that the method is to shed newlight on the study of Buddhist sutra.Firstly, the author generalizes academic achievements around the study of Liuzutanjing made in past seventy years, and argues the study on Liuzutanjing Dun-hung version should be engaged in a wide historical background in stead of limiting it in the domain of regional study. Then, having summarized the common trends and main types of the study, the author argues new method should be employed in the study of Hui-neng's life in Liuzutanjing, apart from the existent methods of studying this Buddhist master.In chapter one, the author proofreads and annotates the words about Hui-neng's life in Sutra Liuzutanjing, which is used as the basic materials for his arguments in the dissertation.
