Pi Rixiu was one of the famous essayists and poets of the later Tang-dynasty, while the one and only of his works that was now come down to us was Pi Zi Wen Sou. This work was composed by ten volumes, in which the first to the ninth volumes were prose while the tenth was poetry. In the declining days of ancient prose, Pi Rixiu inherited the tradition of prose from Hang Yu, one of the most famous essayists of the Tang-dynasty. In this work that reflected profoundly the social reality before the peasant uprising of the later Tang-dynasty the author not only accused the government but also showed his scolding to the upper class and pity for the lower class.Pi Zi Wen Sou, with various styles and abundant contents, is exactly a witness of the social reality of the later Tang-dynasty. It has been thought that the styles of Pi's prose were diversiform, while the principle single. But it is not full. One of the most important features of his prose is that he showed his hatred for tyranny and his pity for people in his work. Because of the great effects of Pi's prose on the prose of the whole later Tang-dynasty, this thesis tries to analyze the characteristics of Pi's prose by studying the style of his writing.This dissertation is composed of six chapters. The former three chapters discuss the characteristics and contents of Pi Rixiu's prose by analyzing his Ci Fu, Bei Zhuan and Lun Bian. The fourth and fifth chapters deal with Pi Rixiu's Ming Zhen and Zan Song, Ti Ba and Shu Ji. The last chapter discusses the ideological content and feature...
