Poetry is a gem in the treasure house of world literature. For thousands of years, numerous scholars have been engaged in its translation. However, compared with the translation of other literary forms, poetry translation occupies a very small percentage since poetry is the highest form of literature, setting much higher requirements on translators. There are even smaller volumes of works on poetry translation studies, if any, which are mainly concentrated on the "internal aspects", like translatability or untranslatability of poetry, translating norms, translating techniques etc. The author intends to make a tentative study on the external constraints which function in the operation of poetry translation.Deconstruction is a new translation school, which advocates the translator's creativity and emphasizes the translator's subjectivity. The author gets inspirations from this school and makes it as the theoretical foundation of this study. In this thesis, the author makes a tentative and more comprehensive study of poetry translator's subjectivity. After introducing the study object, aim, significance of this thesis and its adopted research method and theoretical framework in Chapter One and reviewing the poetry translation study achievements and the representative propositions of Deconstructionists in Chapter Two, the author focuses her attention mainly on the analysis of macroscopic and microscopic constraints in the operation of poetry translation. The discussion of macro ones is arranged in Chapter Three and based on the relevant propositions of Andre Lefevere. The micro ones are selectively summarized according to their necessities and discussed in Chapter Four. Both analyses are supported by some appropriate poetry translation examples. In the end, the author comes to the conclusion that all the constraints are possibly discovered and restrained to improve the quality of poetry versions, and makes out a diagram to illustrate her idea.
