The Italian philosopher Croce had ever said that all history description is just to describe the present age. We can understand the history description deeply, only when we grasp the contemporary cultural spirit essentially. Although it is not and also should not be a simplistic isomorphic relation between the change of cultural spirit and literature creation, undoubtedly, as the most direct circumstances of literature development, the changing culture must deeply affect the whole process of literature creation, dissemination and acceptance, etc. If we want clearly understand the changing trajectory and spiritual direction of Chinese novels since 1990s, it is very important to understand the contemporary cultural transformation. Base on all is stated above, firstly, this article tries to collect the clues of the cultural transformation and seek the spiritual direction of it. Secondly, it wants to reveal the special relation between the contemporary cultural transformation and the novel creation trends. And thirdly, to grasp the cultural and spiritual reasons of all novel creation trends since 1990s.The paper can be divided into two parts:The first part: The Contemporary Cultural Transformation and The Reformation of Novels. This part is mainly about the process of the contemporary cultural transformation. Based on analysis of many cultural phenomena, it sums up the developmental trends of contemporary culture: diversification, secularization, and commercialization. And, it also concludes and describes the contemporary culture pattern: political ideology culture, elitism culture, secularism culture, and commercialism culture exist simultaneously. Then, it talks something about the effects that cultural transformation takes to whole novel produce. This part includes four sections.Section 1: Cultural Conflicts and Integration before the Transformation. For seeking the historical genes of the contemporary cultural transformation, this section mainly recalls the tradition of 20th century's culture reformation and analyzes the cultural conflicts and integration before the transformation.Section 2: Linear Description of the Contemporary Cultural Phenomena.
