Hui Yuan was a master of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism. While as a monk he championed Buddhism as "the only religion of Truth and Eternity", he also made crucial contributions to the amalgamation and development of traditional Chinese cultures. This paper proposes to use a paradigm of the relationship of spiritualism and rationalism to discuss the life and practice of Hui Yuan. It. seeks to shed light on how he remained committed to rationalism throughout his life as a deeply religious person.
