Translation essence has always been the focus of translation studies, for it's the foundation of translation theories and directly relates to the construction of translatology. In the studies of translation essence, people seldom distinguish literature translation from non-literature translation; while on the other hand, they always unconsciously apply their conclusions on the essence of non-literature translation to the study of literature translation, which has inevitably affected its further development: disagreements on the rules regulating literary translation and non-literary translation respectively are predestined by the great differences between the two types of works. Now many scholars have realized this problem and confined themselves to the study of the essence of literature translation. On the basis of Mr. Zheng Hailing's opinions on the essence of literature translation in his Harmony Theory and other scholars'conclusions, this thesis tries to demonstrate the fundamental characteristics of literature translation in a full and objective way.This thesis consists of three chapters, as well as an Introduction and a Conclusion. The first chapter evaluates current studies on the essence of literature translation, including that of Harmony Theory.
