Since 1980s, Chi Li's novels have received much attention from the literary critics. Her earlier works depict the real and difficult urban life of ordinary townspeople, and describes the living conditions of them. Commenting on the relationship between her works and social life, critics mostly approaches her works from the perspective of neorealism. In 1990s, with the uprising of popular cultures in China, writers tried to compose in their own way, divorced from the world of"common writing language". Chi Li, at that time, aiming at writing for ordinary people, surpassed and transformed from her former style in the face of cultural front. The readers and the critics as well, were much impressed by her constant efforts in exploring new forms, her tireless upgrading of her material scope and writing viewpoint, and her courage to face the totally new media era and the challenge in the era. The transition from pure literature to active involvement into popular culture is just in line with the development in present world. The writer of this thesis makes an attempt to study how Chi Li accomplished the return to popular cultures and retained her writing style under the impact of the market economy to literary creation and to literary criticism.
