A Study On Embedded Word Of Ningxia Hui Nation's Chinese From The Angle Of Social Linguisitcs

Based on the Study of an individual case, embedded word in Ningxia Hui Nation's Chinese, with a historical review of evolution of Hui Nation's language and an investigation of the relation between the formation of Hui Nation and Chinese language, this paper puts forward a tentative idea to explain the linguistic variety caused by national amalgamation with the embedding theory.From multilingualism to bilingualism, then to single-language, the language of Hui Nation passed an evolvement procedure. Although Hui Nation chose Chinese language as it's national language, it's original languages were not fully discarded, actually some elements of the original languages were taken into Chinese and were embedded into Chinese system. These elements, together with the Islamized Chinese variety used in Hui Nation, produced the special Hui Nation's Chinese used as a communication tool within Hui Nation. So Hui Nation's Chinese is a variety of Chinese which is specially used within Hui Nation. The emergence of Hui Nation's Chinese was caused by social needs and psychological needs. Hui Nation's Chinese is a mirror of special social life and national psychology.After we investigated the characteristic of embedded word in Hui Nation's language, we find embedded word of Hui Nation's Chinese follows Chinese grammar rules and phonetic rules. It can be used to make fixed phrase with Chinese word, and can also be used to make temporary phrase to express the special cultural meaning of Hui Nation.Through the analysis of etymology and meaning of embedded word of Hui Nation's Chinese, we find that embedded word of Hui Nation's Chinese has a special origin. One origin is the substratum of the languages of Hui Nation's ancestor. Another origin is Temple Speech of Hui Nation. Two different kinds of embedded word of Hui Nation's Chinese are used in different occasions and emerged in different age.According to the embedded way of embedded word of Hui Nation's Chinese, we classify embedded word of Hui Nation's Chinese into four types: transcribe sound, transcribe sound and annotate, transcribe sound and meaning, transcribe meaning. Embedded word of Hui Nation's Chinese forms an integrated system. From the development trail of embedded word of Hui Nation's Chinese we find that embedded word of Hui Nation's Chinese passed through a gradual procedure to become Chinese word.Once it was formed, embedded word of Hui Nation's Chinese became the linguistic symbol of Hui Nation. Embedded word of Hui Nation's Chinese indicates the property of Hui Nation. As a linguistic symbol, embedded word of Hui Nation's Chinese plays social functions: the communicational function and organizational function within Hui Nation society.
