The image of"Unnecessary Man"firstly emerged in early 19th century Russia when Czar was still ruling. It has aroused extensive attention since the date of its birth. This paper aims at embodying the course of development and relative characteristics of representative figures through logical reasoning and analysis.The image of"Unnecessary Man"displays distinct characteristics along with the passage of time and the change of environment. Onegin in 1920s is filled with passion, restlessness and rebellious spirit; helpless in the dark era, Betrolin in 1930s melancholy, pessimistic and resentful; Rudin in 1940s fights passionately for democratic revolution but is unable to realize his brave dream; while Oblomova, a representative figure of the end of the century, diminishes to a person who is good-for-nothing.This paper delivers an objective analysis of the image. These figures are usually born to a wealthy family and brought up in excellent environment, which unfortunately leads to their idleness. They suffer from dual personality and great pressure from their inner spirit. Their refusal to accompany the poor results in their insulation, mutual misunderstanding and finally a tragic ending. Despite all their weakness, however, the real cause of their tragedy lies in the society and objective reality.Through analysis, it is not hard to discover that the image of"Unnecessary Man"in Russian literature is not unique. Jia Baoyu in Dream in the Red Mansion is another good case in point. He displays typical characteristics of an"Unnecessary Man", rebellious but useless to the society.
