Since the 1970's, a profound revolution has taken up in linguistic field. These ideas such as language function, language communicative purpose and communicative strategy have aroused linguists' interest and concern in many countries. Meanwhile, English for Specific Purpose (ESP) has become an important part of English teaching. The theories of language function and textual rhetorical function have been widely applied in ESP. English for Science and Technology (EST) is a major sub-division of English for Specific Purpose (ESP). Therefore, it is a new trend to analyze EST rhetorical features at present. This paper is mainly concerned with a systematic analysis and research on EST discourse from a rhetorical perspective. Foreign EST rhetorical analysis approach is introduced and illustrated in this paper in order to make EST readers comprehend which kind of rhetorical functions and rhetorical techniques are used in a specific EST discourse. The thesis uses the Rhetorical Process Chart by Professor Louis Trimble in Washington University as the theoretical basis. The study has been focused on rhetorical functions and rhetorical techniques in EST discourse. Based on EST teaching and translation practice in our country, the thesis intends to make a tentative research on EST rhetorical process with the purpose of compensating for the inadequacies in this research area and improving EST teaching practice and translation practice.
