The Selected Works of Modern Chinese Literary is an important literature collection which collects many classical works of the history of modern literature. Besides, it has certain representativeness in the history of literature. There are four genres are involved in the book, including poetry, prose, fiction and drama, so language varies much.With more than ten kinds of rhetoric are using, the book that give the sentence pattern and usage of the rhetorical characteristics and diversification so that it provides favorable conditions, and the analysis and discussion to us with great significance for the research. Based on syntax, semantics and pragmatics as a starting point, this paper will study the rhetorical question with the relevant knowledge of semantics and pragmatics through The Selected Works of Modern Chinese Literary. The whole paper could be divided into five parts.The first chapter of Paper is introduction which is the study of the device ’"rhetorical question"’which summarizes the studies that conducted by many linguists. The ideas mainly originated from those studies. Meanwhile, brief introduction will be made in this paper.The second Chapter of Paper is the study of the device "rhetorical question" which summarizes the studies that conducted by many linguists. The second parts will make several discussions of "selected works" rhetorical adverbs in rhetorical research that based on the investigation to the large number of a rhetorical question. We can summarize some common rhetorical adverbs, mainly includes " could it be said that.","or","no","not" and "no","and","also","why","why not","who","how to","which","what". We can use the negative form indicate affirmative meaning, in the form of a certain negative meaning, the rhetorical adverbs is not exceptional. They are able to express strong subjectivity, strengthen the speaker to say yes or no the content of the tone and attitude, and make the language more strong subjective emotional color. Some rhetorical adverbs are not only a kind of function, perhaps they said in the sentence backchat tone also depending on the context to determine.The third chapter in the Chinese modern literature selected counter-question example, on the basis of comparison and consideration of extracting device " rhetorical question " pragmatic functions in the sentence, complaints and dissatisfaction, the puzzled, scorn and ridicule, argue and argue, helpless and sympathy, table proposals, persuasion and discouraged, modest and polite, table imperative, commands, and urged.The fourth Chapter of Paper mainly shows the weak grammar function of rhetorical question, like the function of reminds, table to show off and joy, remind, ridicule and flirt, totally six kinds of functions. The author explains the various pragmatic functions in detail on the basis of describing the specific examples in The Selected Works of Modern Chinese Literary.The fifth chapter is the conclusion.From the examples about rhetorical question in The Selected Works of Modern Chinese Literature,we can summarize the rhetorical figures in the semantic and pragmatic features.
