The research of vocabulary acquisition has often been studied within the fields of language teaching and applied linguistics in recent years. The problem of vocabulary acquisition is attracting more and more academic concern. Some scholars believe that vocabulary acquisition is the center of second language acquisition. All the language skills, such as listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation, etc, must be related to vocabulary. Therefore, vocabulary acquisition is an indispensable part in language acquisition, and it is undoubtedly necessary for us to make efforts on studying how individual English words are acquired by EFL learners. Confronting the different teaching methods, teaching materials, teaching environment and other factors, the sudden tremendous number of new words is really hard for freshmen to memorize. Naturally, word memorization is an unavoidable issue for freshmen in English learning.The present paper tries to analyze the development of vocabulary and the related theories concerning vocabulary acquisition from the perspectives of cognitive psychology, linguistics, information processing and memory, in order to explore into the correlation between the association memorizing method and memorizing effect, to testify the feasibility of the methods in theory and to draw a positive conclusion in carrying out the experiment in real classroom, which lays a good theoretical foundation for applying association memorizing method in teaching and is conducive to autonomous learning and English vocabulary teaching.An experimental study is designed to testify the effect of association on memorizing English words by testing 74 freshmen the words in the first five units of college English course New Horizon English Book One. There are six parts in this paper. First of all, the development of English vocabulary and the current state of teaching are briefly stated.
