Correlation Between Postgraduate Students' Autonomous Learning And Knowledge Self-construction

Autonomous learning basing on the principles of humanistic psychology and cognitive psychology is also called self-directed learning. It is a learning approach but not teaching methodology. Autonomous learning has been a heated topic of research within the field of applied linguistics in western countries for the last two decades. At present, more and more domestic scholars begin to advocate themselves into autonomous learning research and obtain some preliminary achievements. However, results of study show that they just touched upon narrow field of autonomous learning approach with less empirical research method. Especially, less research had been done on postgraduates' autonomous learning. To be honest, as far as certain characters of postgraduates are concerned, it is necessary for them to apply autonomous learning approaching in learning. No doubt postgraduates can be considered as adult learners. That is, they have stronger motivation and attitude for autonomous learning and have sufficient strategies and skills to be independent learner. All of them provided necessary qualifications for them.From cognitive perspective, language acquisition is much more a cognitive and constructive process. It concerns not only language itself but also individualization. Knowledge is a continuous construction through the individual's interactions with the environment and intelligence.From humanistic perspective, the purpose of education is the whole-life study. Humanistic approaches emphasize the importance of the inner world of the learner and place the individual's thoughts, feelings and emotions at the forefront of all human development.
