During the thirty years of modern Chinese literature, there have emerged numerous historic novels, which contributed to the treasure house of modern literature. With varying quality they deserve our research and attention with many works of high artistic quality. The limited research at present is scattered in the reviews of individual writers and works, which lacks a whole systematic overall vision and theoretical exaltation. So there is a wide gap between the variety of works and the scarcity of critics.This thesis adopts a morphological approach in research from the following considerations: First, to present a complicated look of historic novels through combing their emerging reason, theme and narrative strategy. Second, to provide a new researching perspective with pioneering work. Modern historic novels can be classified into four categories: reality criticism, emotional experience, psycho-analysis and cultural irony, on basis of different understanding and artistic perusing of different writers. There are also significant similarities and close association between them in opposing the repression of traditional society and breaking through the limitation of existing narrative.The thesis is divided into four chapters, respectively analyzing the backgroud, themal significance and narrative strategy of the four categories.
