The thesis is a Jungian study on D.H. Lawrence's view of the self by analyzing three of his novels in different periods of his life.The thesis looks into Lawrence's critical and cultural legacy and current research in China and foreign countries, and attempts to address more fully these two questions: how Jung has influenced Lawrence; and what Lawrence's view of the self is.Lawrence's view of the self is to be the whole man alive. This view had undergone three stages of development as manifested in his major novels and critical essays. His early autobiographical novel Sons and Lovers can be regarded as the discovering stage, in which Lawrence believes the true self is an independent one; Women in Love of the middle period represents the exploring stage of Lawrence, who now believes that the ideal self is a star-equilibrium one. And finally the novel Lady Chatterley's Lover is the maturing stage of Lawrence's view of the self: here Lawrence defines the self as "the whole man alive".The thesis draws on Jung's analytical psychology, in particular Jung's theory of individuation and related archetypes: shadow, anima and persona. Such an approach is relevant to this study not only because here we are dealing with Lawrence's quest for the self while facing the spiritual problem of modern man, but also, as demonstrated in this study, Jung had great influence on the formation of Lawrence's view of the self.The thesis consists of four chapters.The first chapter is introduction. It states the aims, significance and related methodology of the study: It points to the gap in terms of a Jungian study of Lawrence's view of the self, which is found after literature review of the study of D. H. Lawrence.The second chapter serves as a theoretical framework, and explores the relationship between Jung's theory and Lawrence's view of the self.
