In recent years, more and more scholars in both translation circle and the region of literature began to take great interests in the research of translated literature. This dissertation exactly belongs to this kind of research. It is a piece of macro, function-oriented research with the incorporation of historical factor. On the one hand, it uses polysystem theory to probe into the position of translated literature in the Chinese literary system and the influence of translated literature on Chinese literature, culture, and even society during the May 4th span (1917-1927); and on the other hand, it aims at verifying some hypotheses concerning translation and translated literature in polysystem theory through making use of these historical facts in Chinese translated literature during this period. Therefore, this dissertation is developed with two objectives: theoretical verification and historical recognition.After presenting the hypotheses concerning translation and translated literature and showing the conditions of Chinese literature during the May 4th span accord with those given by Even-Zohar under which translated literature may go from periphery to the center, this dissertation commences a historical description on the state of translation and translated literature during the May 4th span. The description on translated literature is organized from three perspectives: the target language, the original language, and the favorable objective conditions for the development of translated literature, and the description on translation is centered on the change of translation method during this period. There comes in the following the discussion about the influence of translated literature on Chinese literature, culture, and even society.According to the historical description on the state and influence of Chinese translated literature, the author reckons that those hypotheses in polysystem theory can largely hold water in Chinese literary context during the May 4th span. Meanwhile, in view of the huge cultural difference between China and Israel, the author also points out that if polysystem theory takes into consideration the individual translator and scholar's cultural attitudes towards literature and culture, its explanation power on Chinese translated literature will get stronger.
