Zhang Yun-ao was an important anthologist of Wen Xuan, Selection of Refined Literature in the Qing Dynasty. His book named Xuan Xue JiaoYan plays an significant role in the study of Wen Xuan. As a famous poet in the periods of Jia Qing and Qian Long in the Qing Dynasty, his style with the good qualities but not the bad ones of the poets Yuan Mei and ZhaoYi, bears many similarities of Xing Ling shool. Unfortunately, no much attention has been to paid to the study of Zhang Yun-ao as yet. For relocation his position in the history of Chinese Literature, the thesis intends to make a thorough research into Zhang Yun-ao's life experience, his own study in Selection of Refined Literature and his poetry. Followed by a detailed study of his family history, his life and his roaming, the thesis places extra emphasis on Zhang Yun-ao's extensive studies in Wen Xuan, his preference to another anthologist Li Shan's annotation to Wen Xuan, his research of Li Shan's form, and unique way of study in Wen Xuan with literary perspective. The last part of the thesis is to comb his theory of poetry, and deals with his artistic characteristics of individual nature and subjective disposition in his poems, his making out of learning, his poems'being profound but not unsmooth.
