College English teaching in China has been taught and learnt as a knowledge subject for quite a long time. The teaching method is focused on the cultivating of grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension but not on the comprehension ability. However, language is a social phenomenon, and its main function lies on communication. So foreign language teaching should emphasis not only on language knowledge but also on the cultivating of student's communication ability in real language environment.Pragmatics is a subject to research how to use words in a given context, and how to understand and apply language in different language communication situation. It supplies new fields and methods for the language educationists. The author tries to study the communicational and pragmatic abilities of English learners from the pragmatic angle. And it is useful to make us have a better understanding of the nature of language learning. The nature of language learning is to cultivate the ability to use language appropriately in a specific context so as to reach the goal of effective communication. The thesis is analyzing the improvement of communication pragmatic ability through some pragmatic theories so can devote to the development of modern teaching theories.There are five parts together for the thesis. The first part introduces pragmatics and its theories briefly. The second part puts the emphasis on the cultivation of English listening from the pragmatic angle. The author introduces some basic information about listening comprehension, and then analyses it through Conversational Implicature theory and Relevance theory.
