Anton Chekhov is accepted by us as a critical realism writer, but his works also reveals modern consciousness obviously, such as symbolism, impressionism, absurdness and so on. This paper tries to analyze the impressionism characteristics which have not been studied systematically at the present time in detail. The paper is divided into three parts.Chapter one is prolegomenon. Section one expounds on the current situations at home and abroad. Section two combs such contents as impressionism painting, impressionism music and impressionism literature, points out their characters and representations respectively.Chapter two expounds specifically on Chekhov novels'impressionism characteristics. Section one discusses structure'openness in his novels. The beginning of novels seems ordinary, but it has powerful compactness. On the novels plot treatment, the author is good at capturing flash image and one or some sections in daily life, so it emerges a trend of desalinating plot. The end of novels is unfolded and has continuity, leaving many gaps filled by readers, rather than giving fixed or expected results. Section two indicates that it handles theme at will and expresses integration moment and eternality, and digs into intellectual themes specifically, points out that the works shaped an intellectual world hanged over"gray melancholy of Chekhov". Section three discusses his special writing techniques. The first is hazy skill. It is used to depict intuition of people and exaggerates the feelings or emotions of people. The second is condensed skill. It uses vivid words or motions to describe characters and leaves whole impression on readers. The third is partition skill. Author used it to describe environment, dismember reality scenes by some details and break the integrity of the whole picture.Chapter three analyzes the formation reasons of Chekhov novels'impressionism characteristics in two aspects: social factor and personal factor, then discusses its influences to other writers and trend of literary thoughts. Conclusion summarizes the paper and look forward to the research prospect of Chekov novels'modern consciousness.
