Fairy tales bring children laughter of joy, and bring them tears of sadness; fairy tales make children know the good and the evil in the world, and tell them how to behave themselves. It is fairy tales that accompany children's growth and influence their life deeply. Therefore, it is necessary to make a study of fairy tales and produce more and better fairy tales for children.Since the publication of A Study of Fairy Tales in 1916, people have studied fairy tales from many a angle, which promotes the development of fairy tales. From the beginning of 20th century, as a relatively independent interdisciplinary subject (Shen Dan, 2000), stylistics has developed rapidly, and a lot of studies have been made of various styles. However, as an independent style, fairy tales have not been paid more attention to in the stylistic studies. In view of this case, this thesis will make an analysis of the functional stylistic features of English fairy tales from two aspects: 'processes' and 'conjunctions'.The research of this thesis is mainly based on Halliday's theory of functional stylistic features (1971), theory of ideational function (2000), and theory of textual function (2000), and Zhang Delu's (1998) meaning theory of literary works. This thesis will analyze the frequency distribution of different types of processes in 20 English fairy tales and compare the frequency distributions of processes and conjunctions1 in 20 English fairy tales with those in 20 English short stories of approximately the same length. The purpose of the analysis and comparison is to investigate the functional stylistic features of English fairy tales. The choice of short stories to compare with fairy tales is because both of them are stories with the former written for adults and the latter mainly for children, thus their differences can show the stylistic features of fairy tales best. The first step of the analysis is to identify the processes and conjunctions in 20 English fairy tales and 20 English short stories...
