The Study Of Fuzzy Rhetoric In Communication

Fuzziness is an inherent property of natural language. Since the ancient Greek philosopher Eubulides proposed the sorties paradox, which contained the idea of fuzziness, fuzziness has attracted more and more attention. In 1965, L. A. Zadeh published his Fuzzy Sets. After that, fuzzy language became the focal point of the study of philosophers and linguists. It not only deepened people's knowledge of fuzzy language greatly, but also inspired the researches on fuzzy language more systematically and academically. Until now, people paid much attention to the theoretical discussion on fuzzy language, made great efforts on its semantic meaning, so they overlooked the roles it could play in the field of pragmatics and communication.There is no doubt that the fuzzy theory has opened a new area and provided new point of view for the study of the other aspects of linguistics. Fuzzy rhetoric is just one of the new branches. As the inherent property, fuzziness may have strong impact on people's understanding and use of the rhetoric. It must play a positive part in communication. This paper, from the angle of fuzzy theory, based on the basic theories in pragmatics, rhetoric and aesthetics, using others' study for reference, mainly discusses the applications of fuzzy rhetoric in communication, and sets as the goal a detailed study on the positive roles of fuzzy rhetoric in communication. The study on fuzzy rhetoric will have important effect on the development of language communication and fuzzy rhetoric.The paper begins with the definition of fuzziness in language, discusses four factors that cause the fuzziness from the objective and subjective angle, and further states the certainty of fuzziness in communication. After the comparative analysis of fuzzy rhetoric, traditional rhetoric and modern rhetoric, it concludes the major objects and contents of fuzzy rhetoric to help people understand it. On this basis, the paper makes detailed discussion and analysis of the major forms of fuzzy rhetoric, to deepen people's understanding by making use of a great deal of powerful examples.
