Yi-Kwei Sze was born in Shanghai in 1915. He received his early training at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music under Professor Ying Shangneng and the great Russian singer and professor Shushlin. During the Second World War, he went to Chungqing and taught at the National Conservatory of Music. He made concert tours in various cities in China and became well-known in the country.Yi-Kwei Sze came to the United States in 1947 to continue his studies with Edyth Walker and the legendary bass Alexander Kipnis, which brought his professional proficiency to a higher degree. In 1949, his New York recital was incredibly successful, and soon his career took him around the world. He sings with orchestras and in opera houses throughout America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. His outstanding achievements have won worldwide recognition and he is generally acclaimed as a world first-class singer, as well as one of the first Chinese singers to establish a career in the west.In 1970 and the later several years, Yi-Kwei Sze taught at the Cleveland Institute and the Eastman School of Music, keeping devoting his life to music.There he well combined his rich experience and teaching, and cultivated numerous high-level students.To better serve his motherland, in 1979, Yi-Kwei Sze came back to china and taught at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. With his rich knowledge and experience in vocal music, the accomplished vocalist gave people in this area his maximum help and best suggestions, winning his high reputation in China.
