This is a study of the feasibility and effects of teaching college English listening and speaking through Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) approach, aiming at the practical problems existing in English teaching circles which reflect on teaching theories and practical aspects.Combining the advantages of both traditional and modern language teaching theories, TBLT approach allows students to learn and use the language by a series of interactive tasks, which is quite popular in elementary and middle schools in China nowadays. However, the outcome of present English teaching at colleges is far from satisfactory, especially in the aspects of English listening and speaking abilities. Most college students cannot use the language appropriately in a certain social context and some cannot even say a single correct English sentence or correctly catch the whole sentence. The reasons for this may be multidimensional, of which the approaches being adopted in College English Teaching are not so effective. Therefore, TBLT approach should be advocated to develop college students'comprehensive and communicative abilities of using a language, particularly in improving students'listening and speaking abilities through learning activities which are designed to engage them in the authentic, practical and functional use of language for meaningful purposes.In addition to a brief introduction (Chapter One) and a conclusion (Chapter Six), this thesis is composed of four parts.Chapter One provides a general survey of English language teaching in China and abroad.
