Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, particularly after the implementation of reform and opening-up policy, more frequent cultural exchanges have been carried out between China and the western countries, which is unparalleled in history. While China has been busy learning from advanced achievements of western countries in science, technology and culture, the international community also needs to know more about China in the past and the prosperous China at present. Political translation (from Chinese to English in particular) plays a key role in promoting international communication. Cheng Zhenqiu is an expert on diplomatic translation, devoting his whole life to Chinese political translation practices and studies. He is in the van of studying Chinese political translation theories, whose political translation studies have been of significance and guidance in this field.By applying modern western translation theories, this thesis intends to explore Cheng Zhenqiu's political translation theories from the perspectives of cross-cultural communication, pragmatics and stylistics. This thesis employs a large number of examples from the translation of Selected Works of Mao Tse-tung and that of Selected Works of Deng Xiaoping, which could be regarded as paragons in the translation of Chinese political literature. It aims at stating that it is necessary, as Cheng Zhenqiu analyzes, for translators to understand the translation principles applied in political translation by integrating the factors of culture, language and style (it is difficult to distinguish the three in practice) and to adopt appropriate translation approaches. Furthermore, this thesis intends to prove that Cheng Zhenqiu has made great contributions to the cultural communication between China and the West and the Chinese translation studies as well.This thesis consists of four chapters excluding introduction and conclusion.Introduction briefly introduces the theme and the basic structure of this thesis.This thesis begins with the introduction of Cheng Zhenqiu in Chapter One: his life story, major translation works, and the essence of his political translation...
