This study is undertaken to reduce fossilization in the Chinese college English teaching classes, aiming at improving the teaching effect of college English. The major research question to be addressed in this thesis is: what are the casual factors of fossilization in college English learning? After conducting a library and classroom research, this major research question is addressed in this thesis. The main causal factors of fossilization include internal factors, external factors and the mutual effect of internal and external factors. Issues concerning the reduction and overcoming of fossilization are also carefully examined. With this research question as a major link, the author presents the thesis in the following parts: 1) introduction of the study; 2) literature review; 3) implications of the study of fossilization in second language teaching and suggested measures to overcome fossilization; 4) tentative efforts in personal teaching to overcome fossilization with two case studies as examples; and 5) conclusion. The literature review covers a presentation of the definitions and characteristics of interlanguage and fossilization, categorization of fossilization and its casual factors, namely, internal factors, external factors, and mutual effect of internal and external factors. The researches on fossilization have significant implications in second language teaching and learning. Based on such analysis, some effective measures are suggested to help overcome fossilization. The writer has made tentative efforts to put into practice the causal factor analysis of fossilization and the suggested measures to overcome it in personal teaching. As a result, a noticeable improvement in college English teaching has been witnessed.
