Interlanguage, proposed by Selinker in 1972, is a very important notion in second language acquisition, which is applied to elaborate the second language learning process. It has been over 30 years since it was put forward, and great achievements have been made in the study of this field. In the course of research, fossilization, regarded as an interesting phenomenon, is always being concerned by all the IL researchers. Fossilization is a universal phenomenon in language development and a huge barrier for successful language learning. Inspired and stimulated by the close observation of the current written English teaching and learning, the author intends to discuss fossilization from the standpoint of written competence training with the ultimate goal of more strategies of dealing with fossilization.Literature reviews of the previous studies on IL and EA have been illustrated. And then an analysis of fossilization errors has been made in this thesis. All the data came from compositions written by first-year students of Changchun Institute of Technology in their English writing assignments. By the use of error analysis, fossilization errors have been scrutinized. The purpose is to find the regularity of distribution and frequency of fossilization errors and the causes of fossilization from compositions by first-year students to gain some insights into the English language teaching in writing. Therefore help language teachers adopt appropriate teaching method to promote college students' English learning.
