With the advent of globalization, the society we are living in is gradually transformed into a multi-language and multi-culture one, thus is of crucial importance to establish a efficient communication channel and harmonious mutual relationship."Declining act", basically speaking, is more likely to render the unpleasant social intercourse for it doesn't take others'feelings into consideration. So when declining act is involved, if people do not make efforts to fix the relationship, it might result in contradiction, misunderstanding, and failure."Politeness"plays an important role in creating and maintaining harmonious relationship. So an analysis of"declining act"from the perspective of politeness will decrease the contradiction and misunderstanding between the intercourses of different countries,The thesis intends to analyze the default of"declining discourse"and the basic state and functions of the elements that make up the"declining discourse"based on the information collected from questionnaires and surveys by Chinese and Japanese undergraduates. The skeleton of the thesis is as follows:The first part is the introduction. It mainly focuses on the significance of declining discourse in a multi-language and multi-culture society and the necessity and possible solutions to analyze it from the aspect of politeness. The second part (I. II. III. IV) is the analysis of the issue. Chapter I tells the existing questions concerning"declining act"and the theoretical foundation of the thesis based on the generalization of the former achievements on"declining act"and the analysis of"politeness". Chapter II elaborates on the definition of"politeness"and its connotations, thus providing a theoretical basis for the following analysis. Chapter III centers on the default of unmarked politeness of Japanese native speakers and Chinese native speakers and the functions of the elements that make up the default on the basis of abundant examples collected. Chapter IV deals with several questions remaining to be solved after the thesis. The third part is the conclusion. The default of conversation between Chinese college students and Japanese college students not only has different kinds of factors of talking politeness which constitutes the conversation, but also has different basic condition and organism of the related factors.
