In this article we outline a basic approach to treating metonymy properly in English-Chinese translation system. The approach is guided by the differences of acceptability of metonymy which were obtained by our comparative survey among two languages English and Chinese. Nearly all students had learned translation, and most are now practicing translation or interpretation in various areas. Many postgraduate students go on to teach translation. Direct translations were used for Chinese people. Metonymy translation must obey the same principle with it. We all believe that it is necessary to teach metonymic translation. As teachers of metonymic translation, we should first have clear ideas about how to improve metonymic translation abilities. Many teachers agree that students of translation should take at least eight courses: translation of metonymy theory, translation of metonymy practice, translation criticism, comparative studies of English and Chinese language, semantics, stylistics, Chinese and English writing. The program combines translation, literature and linguistic theories with translation practice and courses aimed at improving comprehensive linguistic capability. Some studies of translation teaching that involved in sending questionnaires to every English department or teacher of translation have been carried out. The basic objective of translation teaching is to help students establish correct translation norms and criteria. At the undergraduate stage, application of metonymy to translation teaching should be paid special attention in translation practice and should be dealt with the relationship between language and culture, comparisons of English and Chinese, translation criticism, translation history, and a brief introduction to translation circles both at home and abroad.Teachers of English-Chinese metonymic translation should have a rich experience in the practice of translation and have published some books or articles on translation studies. Most translation theorists agree that translation is understood as a transfer process from a foreign language—or a second language—to the mother tongue.
